City Nature Challenge: Bugs & Blossoms Bioblitz

City Nature Challenge: Bugs & Blossoms Bioblitz

Source: One Tam Calendar

Join us at Ring Mountain Open Space Preserve for a naturalist adventure and celebration of biodiversity! A bioblitz is a quick, intense survey of the species present in an area. Hone your observation skills, become a field biologist for the day, and enjoy some bugs, blossoms, and friends! We will use iNaturalist to document the organisms we see. Who knows, maybe we will even see some species found nowhere else on Earth!

This event is part of the City Nature Challenge, an annual four-day global bioblitz at the end of April, where cities are in a collaboration-meets-friendly-competition to see what can be accomplished when we all work toward a common goal. Our observations will count towards the San Francisco Bay Area team in the quest to beat LA.

The bioblitz will take place from 10:00 am-1:00 pm. Registration is required for all participants 2+ years of age.  If registration is full, complete the form and you will be automatically added to the waiting list and notified via email if a spot becomes available.

Meeting location: Taylor Fire Road gate

About the group: Everyone is welcome! This bioblitz will involve a larger group of nature-curious folks of all ages and experience levels. Bioblitz facilitators will bring expertise about different aspects of Ring Mountain’s biodiversity and will provide coaching on identification and using iNaturalist. <<<Please register here>>>

Pets: Although we love dogs and they are allowed on our bioblitz route, we do not recommend bringing dogs to this event due to the anticipated group size.

Ease of Access & Terrain Characteristics: This event includes a hike of up to 2.5 miles (you can go shorter!). The hike includes traveling over unpaved, varied terrain with inclines and uneven surfaces, including steep fire roads and rocky trails. Most of our exploration will be on-trail. Hazards include poison oak, ticks, and variable weather, so bring sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate layers of clothing.

The terrain is suitable for…

  • Baby carriers - yes
  • Strollers - no
  • Wheelchairs - no

Creature Comforts: Restrooms are not available. Water and some snacks will be available at the meeting location. Please your own reusable water bottle and preferred snacks.

Weather & Cancellations: Please keep an eye on the weather forecast. We may need to cancel in the event of adverse weather conditions, unhealthy air quality, or other unforeseen circumstances. In the case of cancellation, participants will be informed via email.
