Mt. Tamalpais Habitat Restoration
Location: Mount Tamalpais Watershed (exact location TBD - sign up at marinwater.org/volunteer to hear the site selection)
Date and time: Tuesday, November 22, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm

Hooray - the rainy season has finally begun, and we here at Marin Water Volunteer Programs are very excited to kick off our Habitat Restoration events once again! With the help of our volunteers, we will be tackling the removal of French and Scotch broom (Genista monspessulana and Cytisus scoparius) from the Mount Tamalpais watershed. Our broom pulls offer a chance to not only learn about the ecology of invasive species and get outside, but also to get involved directly with restoration projects on the mountain.

Broom pulls are contingent upon the ground being sufficiently wet to remove the plants, so we typically finalize which site on Mt. Tamalpais we will be restoring in the week leading up to the event. Sign up to stay up to date on location selection and other logistical details at marinwater.org/volunteer!

Please bring:

  1. Appropriate attire for habitat restoration. For safety purposes, please make sure everyone coming out has close-toed shoes (preferably with ankle support), thick socks, long sleeves and pants, and layers for cold mornings on the mountain.
  2. Reusable water bottles. We’ll have snacks and water available, but as always are trying to cut down on single-use plastic wherever possible, so do ask that you BYOB.
  3. A positive attitude! Broom pulls are great fun, especially when we all get in the groove of it together.
  4. We will provide snacks, water, all necessary equipment for broom removal, and a safety orientation at the beginning of the day to keep the fun as safe as possible.
  5. Autumn is a truly beautiful and fascinating time to visit Mt. Tamalpais. When you join us for a volunteering event, you receive a day pass for Marin Water trailhead parking lots. We encourage everyone to get out exploring after habitat restoration to see what animals and plants may be emerging with the rains, or simply to soak in the gorgeous weather and scenery.

Our pulls are appropriate for individuals 8 years and older; volunteers 16 years and younger must be accompanied by an adult. If this is your first time volunteering with Marin Water, please remember to fill out Volunteer Permission Slips on our website (marinwater.org/volunteer). Thank you, and we look forward to seeing you soon!
