Loma Alta Birds and Blossoms

This fire road passes through some great wildflower habitats including serpentine soil hosting several unusual species. It’s also one of the best places to see some great birds, including grasshopper sparrows, horned larks, and lazuli buntings. We’ll find a shady place to enjoy lunch, and then descend before the afternoon heat. Total miles: 4.5. Elevation change: 500'. This fire road is a steady climb, but we’ll take it very slowly. Remember to bring lunch, and binoculars if you have them. No pets (except service dogs) are allowed. Adverse weather or poor air quality may cancel. Registration is required.

Questions: Contact Shannon Burke.

Directions: Meet at the gate to Loma Alta Fire Rd on Lucas Valley Rd in San Rafael. From Hwy 101 in San Rafael, take the exit for Lucas Valley Rd west approximately 5.5 miles. Look for the big rock and roadside parking. The gate is on the south side (or left) of Lucas Valley Rd. Do not turn around at the top of the hill. Continue past the trailhead and turn around in the large driveway on the right.
