CANCELLED - Deer Island

Rising above the marshland, the mix of forest and grassland of this little ridge make it a great place to see raptors and other birds that spend the winter here, while the surrounding marsh hosts an abundance of ducks in wet years. We’ll discuss the changes that take place in the plant and animal communities during wintertime. This walk is only a couple of miles long but includes a slow climb to the ridge and a fairly steep downhill section. Total miles: 1.5. Elevation change: 250’. Remember to bring lunch, and binoculars if you have them. No pets (except service dogs) are allowed. Adverse weather or poor air quality may cancel.

Directions: Meet at the gate on Deer Island Ln in Novato. From Hwy 101 in Novato, take the exit for Atherton Ave east 1.7 miles. Turn right onto Olive Ave and left onto Deer Island Ln. The gate is on your right.
