One Tam: many ways to give back to the mountain that gives us so much

West Peak Restoration

Project Overview

A new vision for the West Peak of Mt. Tamalpais restores native species and visitor access.

Indigenous people called Tamalpais home for 5,000 years, and it was so sacred to the Coast Miwok that they would not climb to the summit. Coyote, their name for the god who created man, resided at its peak.

Constructed in the 1950s, the Mill Valley Air Force Station transformed the West Peak of Tam. Following the facility’s closure in 1983, efforts were made throughout the ’80s, ’90s, and 2000s to restore the peak to its natural condition, thereby providing valuable habitat to rare plant communities.

The Marin Municipal Watershed District, in partnership with One Tam, is exploring the next chapter for the West Peak of Tamalpais.

This new vision will ensure cleanup of the site is complete; unique plant communities are enhanced and stewarded; and public access allows visitors to enjoy the breathtaking views and learn more about the unique ecology of the mountain.
