Saturday, August 19, 2017, 10 am-12:30pm: Mt. Tam West Peak Hike - Geology of West Peak
Mt. Tam West Peak Hike - Geology of West Peak
Led by Vic Claassen, Ph. D. Soil Science & Claire Mooney, ASLA
Join UC Davis Soil Scientist Dr. Vic Claassen and Claire Mooney, Deputy Director of the Parks Conservancy's Design & Planning Department to learn more about the geology of West Peak, and how this informs restoration alternatives. We will meet at the Quarry Lot, and hike approximately 20 minutes up the Mountain Top Trail to explore West Peak and the former Mill Valley Air Force Station. As we hike, we will discuss geologic formations within the larger San Francisco Bay Area, explore the unique properties of serpentine soils, and discuss opportunities and challenges for restoration presented by the site's geology. Those interested in a longer hike can continue on with the hike leaders to complete a three mile loop down the Arturo Trail and back the Lagunitas - Rock Springs Fire Road.
Dr. Vic Claassen is a Soil Scientist with UC Davis, specializing in the revegetation of drastically disturbed soils with native species.
Claire Mooney is trained as an ecologist and landscape architect. She is a member of the project team exploring restoration alternatives at West Peak.
Meeting location: The Mountain Theater overflow parking lot (also known as the quarry parking lot) is located just past the Mountain Theater entrance. If you are unfamiliar with the location, this Google Map marks the location of the Mountain Theater (marked as the "Cushing Memorial Amphitheater" on the map), and you will see just north of it, the parking lot marked as "Quarry Parking Lot". To get there, drive up Pan Toll Road, make a right on Ridgecrest Blvd, pass the Mountain Theatre Fire Road and Rock Spring Trail (the entrance to the Mountain Theatre), and look for a dirt parking lot on your right where we are meeting.
